Pharmaceutical Foil: Alu Alu Blister Foil

Alu alu blister foil is mostly made of 8021-O aluminum foil. 8021 alloy belongs to the 8 series aluminum alloy, with Al-Fe-Si elements added. More than 1% of the total alloying elements give it a higher performance advantage. This alloy does not contain Mn and Mg elements, which makes 8021 aluminum foil different from other common pharmaceutical aluminum foils in some properties.

For example, compared with 8011 aluminum foil, 8021 aluminum foil jumbo roll has slightly lower strength and corrosion resistance, but it performs better in elongation and puncture resistance. This feature is crucial for cold-formed pharmaceutical foil, because during the cold stamping process, the aluminum foil needs to have good elongation to ensure that it can be stamped into various shapes of blisters without breaking.

Characteristics of cold-formed pharmaceutical foil

1. Excellent barrier properties

Cold forming blister foil has excellent moisture resistance, light blocking and extremely high barrier properties. Aluminum foil itself provides an almost complete barrier to water and oxygen. This is extremely critical for drug packaging, because many drugs are easily affected by moisture and oxygen and deteriorate. For example, some antibiotic drugs, if exposed to a humid and oxygen environment for a long time, their active ingredients may decompose, thereby reducing the efficacy and even producing harmful substances. Cold-formed drug foil can effectively prevent the entry of moisture and oxygen, greatly extending the shelf life of drugs.

2. Good mechanical properties

It has the characteristics of strong mechanical properties, high anti-blasting performance, strong puncture and tear resistance. During the storage and transportation of drugs, it is inevitable that they will be affected by various external forces, such as extrusion and collision. Cold-formed drug foil can withstand these external forces and protect drugs from damage. For example, during long-distance transportation, drug packaging may be stacked and bumped. The strong mechanical properties of cold-formed drug foil can ensure the integrity of the drugs.

3. High surface quality

Cold-formed drug foil requires a clean surface, uniform color, no spots, no oil stains, flatness and no pinholes. This is not only for beauty, but more importantly to ensure the sealing and safety of drug packaging. If there are defects such as pinholes or oil stains on the surface, external contaminants may enter the packaging and affect the quality of the drug. In addition, there are strict standards for multiple tests such as bacteria and mold, and the heavy metal content does not exceed 0.25 parts per million. The industry standards are strictly implemented to ensure the safety and hygiene of drug packaging.

Applicable drugs

1. High-sensitivity drugs

For highly sensitive drugs that are highly hygroscopic or photosensitive but not suitable for packaging with barrier plastic films, pharmaceutical foil provides an excellent multi-layer configuration. For example, the active ingredients of some drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases may be very sensitive to humidity and light. The moisture-proof and light-shielding properties of cold-formed drug foil can provide an ideal packaging environment for these drugs, ensuring the effectiveness and stability of the drugs during their shelf life.

2. High-end drugs

Due to the high-quality characteristics and relatively high cost of cold-formed drug foil, it is often used for the packaging of high-end drugs. This type of drug has more stringent requirements for packaging. Not only must the quality of the drug be guaranteed, but the high-end positioning of the drug must also be reflected in the packaging. For example, some imported anti-cancer drugs are packaged in cold-formed drug foil, which not only protects the active ingredients of the drug, but also enhances the overall image of the drug.

3. Drugs with strong sealing requirements

For drugs that require high sealing packaging, cold-formed drug foil is the best choice. For example, some volatile drugs can only be prevented from volatilizing and maintaining their efficacy in highly sealed packaging. Cold-formed drug foil can be formed by cold stamping to form a tight blister package, effectively preventing the volatilization of drugs.
